About Me

I am your average Kenyan dude and  have been travelling Kenya as an adult for close to 15 years now. I have travelled on two feet, two wheels, two wings and four wheels. I have bedded down in high end establishments, low cost motels and sometimes nothing more than a hole in the ground. I have met people on my travels who are no longer with us but also seen their children grow into adults.

My emphasis is on all matters camping, camping sites, bandas and other self catering facilities but if something else comes up I write about it as well. I do not work in tourism nor do I sell tourism packages. This is simply a snapshot of my journeys and all opinions are my own. I hope I have the good sense to keep writing.

    just randomly came across your link in another blog and this year I want to be more out dorsy.started the year with wonderful nature walks in laikipia county, and looking at the places you have visited am in awe and feeling inspired. I love nature but I have never camped before. and this year I intend to interact with nature and challenge myself more. Looking forward to more posts from you.

Since then I’ve dreamed of returning to East Africa for an extended period and continuing my explorations. Just like you I’m always happy to find resources that help me with the kind of travel I do and let me tell you in this country those are really few and far between! It’s the reason I started writing actually, totally born out of frustration.         Specific question is recommendation on type of tent to buy, where to buy, average cost. What are accompaniments that I need to also buy. Say I want to go camping in Nanyuki this weekend, and I want to be self sufficient

        Still not enough info; How many people? Car camping or backpacking? What weather conditions? Me recommending for you if I don’t know you would not be honest. Its always advisable to do as much google research beforehand then it’s much easier to ask questions because you already have an idea of what is suitable for you. Then where you need additional info I chip in, ama?

        The questions may be disjoint because of how clueless I am.

        Let me build a scenario. Perhaps I want to go camping at crayfish. Which I have done before, and rented a tent, mattresses, and sheets. But now, I want to only pay for the camping grounds. As a rookie camper, I would just want to pitch tent for the night. A two person tent, that probably would accommodate 2 toddlers. Maybe sleeping bags too. I am not looking at cooking, maybe carry take away food, or eat in nearby restaurants. The tent should be durable enough to last several expeditions. As for weather, do I have a choice? I may camp in Tiwi beach, then it rains overnight. Then I would only be travelling on a station wagon, not a big off-road like your Land Cruiser Prado. So the tent should fit a small car.

        I have done a bit of haphazard backpacking. Jumping on the car and going to distance towns, and spending on different hotels, wherever the night finds us. But I have never considered getting camping gear, until I landed on your blog. I had researched on tents, and saw several offers on OLX.
        But what would serve me was a challenge to pinpoint.

        Now we’re getting somewhere:
        Tent -always buy a size up i.e 2man for 1 pax, 3man for 2 pax etc. If you can, buy one with a mesh inner and a detachable rain fly. Or just one with lots of ventilation. Tents get very hot in the day.
        Sleeping mat – many foam options, I’d avoid an inflatable one for beginners. You could use a normal thin mattress but they are bulky for transport.
        Sleeping bag – if you can find one with a cotton lining this is much more comfortable.
        Pillow – carry the one you use at home.
        Tarp – to put under tent to protect from thorns and also helps water getting in if it rains.
        Where to buy? A good start is any Game store or Decathlon.

Thanks for showing us that we can quench our inner wanderlust. I recently just bought myself a RAV 4. Trust me, you had a lot to do with this purchase decision. Cannot wait to take on nature. I hope someday we can get to pitch tent some place and talk around a fire about our love for the outdoors.

      Zack bwana, you’re one of the few who have asked where I disappeared to – I’m clearly not as popular as I was lead to believe haha. RAV4 is a proper ride for touring, mine took me all over the country (I probably pushed it a but too far but what are cars for?). Keep in touch and let me know how it all goes.

    You (& your family) have shared so many affordable, fun and jaw droppingly beautiful places for us all to explore, it’s like a public service.

    But since coming across your notes from the field the feet are so fekin itchy we’ve said fek it to properly unpacking the apartment in Nairobi in order to hire a car & rent a banda for a few days to soothe the wanderlust.
